SAG Awards Complete Winners List: ‘Squid Game’, ‘CODA’, And More Honored

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were given out on Sunday night. This honor, voted on by fellow actors, is often seen as a predictor for the Academy Awards. However, the SAGs also honor greatness in television. This is strictly an acting honor, so there are no categories for writing, directing, special effects, etc.  Because the SAGs are only voted on by actors, this is considered possibly the second-most prestigious award next to the Oscars.

And The Award Goes To…

CODA has suddenly sprung into frontrunner status for the Oscars by winning the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture (essentially this show’s version of Best Picture). It beat out Belfast, Don’t Look Up, House of Gucci, and King Richard. CODA, directed by Sian Heder, focuses on Emilia Jones as Ruby Rossi, a child of deaf adults (thus, CODA) and the only hearing member of her family. It was released in theaters and on Apple TV+ to great acclaim but not a ton of buzz. This win gives CODA a real boost before the Oscars.

Cast member Troy Kotsur, who played Ruby’s father Frank, won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, becoming the first hearing-impaired actor to ever win this prize.

Breaking a different barrier were the stars of Netflix’s Squid Game, Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon, who took home the Male and Female Actor in the Drama Series categories for their roles in the Korean phenomenon. It’s impressive that these two won when their performances were in Korean (or dubbed into English) and yet their acting chops shined through to an audience of voters that were mostly Americans. Squid Game also took home the Stunt Ensemble trophy. The series was the only project in either the film or television categories to win three awards that night.

Back to films, Jessica Chastain and Will Smith earned the top prizes for Lead Actors for The Eyes of Tammy Fay and King Richard, respectively. West Side Story‘s Ariana DeBose earned the Supporting Female Actor award. Like Kotsur, Jung-jae, and Ho-yeon, this was another breakthrough, this time for a queer Latina. The Stunt Ensemble prize for movies went to No Time To Die.

The Ensemble Cast in a Drama Series prize went to Succession and Ted Lasso took the Ensemble Cast in a Comedy Series trophy. Ted Lasso‘s Jason Sudeikis and Hacks’ Jean Smart earned the Best Male and Female Actor awards for Television Comedy. Finally, in the categories for TV Movie/Miniseries, Michael Keaton won for Dopesick and Kate Winslet scored for Mare of Easttown (although there is some chatter that the latter will get a sequel).
